Argo Tea Construction Underway

Construction is underway as Snell Library’s CyberCafe gets transformed into Boston’s first ArgoTea. ArgoTea offers a variety of specialty beverages derived from an assortment of global teas and coffee. There’s one for everyone! From sweet and fruity to dark and bitter with a little bit of everything in between- you’re sure to be satisfied! As with any construction comes a little (or a lot!) of noise, so please excuse the additional auditory effects in the library as construction is completed. ArgoTea is expected to open the first week of August! Get a head start and choose your favorite beverage by checking out the menu online: http://argotea.com/ Any questions or concerns about the construction of ArgoTea can be directed to Frank Mahoney, Director of Special Projects, at f.mahoney@neu.edu

Welcome Snell Library Co-ops!

This week four Northeastern co-ops have started working at Snell Library to assist in various departments through the summer and fall semesters. Here is a little bit about each of them: Kelsey Strout, Marketing & Events Co-op “My name is Kelsey Strout and I am a middler in the Art and Design program at Northeastern. I traded a small town in New Jersey for the big and beautiful city of Boston. I have had a passion for art my entire life and feel most comfortable when partaking in creative activities. I am working toward a BA in Art and Design and a minor in Business Administration with the hopes of becoming an event designer after graduating. In my spare time, I enjoy drawing, babysitting, going to the beach and baking.” Will Macowski, Graphic Design Co-op “I’m a fourth year Graphic Design major going for a minor in Sociology. Outside of my studies, I enjoy the fine arts and love to draw and sculpt. I’ve recently ventured into the realm of tattooing and frequently transform my living room into a makeshift tattoo parlor.” William Bratches, University Archives Co-op “My name is William Bratches, and I am a middler majoring in history with two minors in business and political science. Although Boston is now home, I am originally from a small town on the Connecticut shoreline. Besides history, I enjoy music, running, reading, cooking, biking, and recently picked up tailoring!” Mike Helly, DMDS Co-op Co-op student Mike Helly is a graphic design major at Northeastern University. Web design and book layout are the areas of design that he finds most interesting. In his free time Mike enjoys to skateboard, play basketball, and listen to hip hop. Welcome new co-ops and best of luck within each of your positions! We are so happy to have you 🙂

Snell Leaders at New Orleans ALA Conference

We at Snell would like to wish our fellow staff members good luck as they head to the 2011 American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans this week. The conference will begin today and be held through June 28th and is one of the largest events for the library community. More than 25,000 librarians, educators, authors, publishers, literacy experts, illustrators and the leading suppliers to the market attend to discuss ways to improve the libraries. Maria Carpenter, Director of Advancement and Marketing at NU Libraries, will present on a fundraising toolkit for librarians she co-developed to help library staff and supporters understand how annual funds, special gifts (such as memorials and tributes), major gifts, and planned giving work. Maria is also an author of Diversity Standards: Cultural Competency for Academic Libraries, a standards and guidelines document for the Association of College & Research Libraries which will be introduced at the conference. Also from Snell Library, Amanda Rust and Annie DeVane will present a poster on their recent research for the Library’s new Drupal-based website. The aim of the survey was to determine what sort of staffing would be necessary for a large, heavily-customized Drupal Web site, and the results, therefore, give a brief overview of the current citizens of the Drupal library community. Karen Merguerian and Diann Smothers were also co-authors on this poster. You can view the poster and full survey results here: http://www.lib.neu.edu/ALADrupalPoster2011/ For more information on the ALA conference that will take place this coming week, check out the website http://www.alaannual.org/content/conference-overview
