Meet the Author Photography

Hello Snippets visitors! This year, the Library Advancement Office has hired me to photograph its Meet the Author series, allowing those who miss the opportunity to see an event to get an idea of what happened during an author’s presentation. Though these photographs have yet to make it to print, technology has granted the Northeastern community the ability to view them, and others from past years, instantly online. If you haven’t yet attended a Meet the Author event (and a strongly suggest you do!), I urge you to check out the Snippets Gallery and the library’s Flickr account, which can be found at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/northeastern_university_libraries/ If you like what you see or if there’s anything you would like to see more of, please feel free to post a comment. I’d love to hear from you!

Oysters and Goats

Sure, we’ve heard all about the Google Goats. And you may have heard about the Andover Goats. Great idea, yes? Use goats to mow down the growth? I recently found out about a similar program for the Boston Harbor. Oysters are being reintroduced to help clear out the water – an oyster can filter 30 gallons of water per day. Amazing! The time lapse video of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay was incredible to watch. Who knew that oysters and goats had so much in common? Now that I know about this project, I am inspired to see if there are any magazine or journal articles that talk more about oysters and ecosystems, or water purification. I bet GreenFILE would be a good database to start with!

Meet the Authors Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein

Tomorrow at 10:30 am in 90 Snell Library, authors Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein return by popular demand. Their new book, Heidegger and a Hippo walk through those Pearly Gates, is another in their line of philosopical treatises presented through jokes, in the same vein as their previous books, Plato and a Platypus walk in to a bar… and Aristotle and an Aardvark go to Washington. The NU Bookstore will be selling copies that the authors will be signing. The book is also available at Snell Libraries. You can also watch their previous talk at Snell Library: Cathcart and Klein

Broadcast Journalist Lynne Joiner at Snell on Friday, October 23

Join us on Friday, October 23 at 12 pm, as Emmy-award winning journalist Lynne Joiner discusess her book, Honorable Survivor: Mao’s China, McCarthy’s America and the Persecution of John S. Service.  John Service was an American foreign service officer, who was often blamed for “losing” China, and who came to be a target for US officials like Joe McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover.  In addition to recently unsealed government documents, Joiner had access to personal papers and photographs of Service and his associates that she weaves into her historical account and presentation.
